THE KCMC DAY
When President Nyerere asked the Minister of Health to attend a graduation ceremony at Bombuli over forty years ago; it was to start a chain of events, which culminated in the establishment of Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre in 1971 under the auspices of the Good Samaritan Foundation (G.S.F.).
Bishop Stephano Moshi, then President of the Foundation of Lutheran Churches in Tanganyika, took the proposal for a teaching hospital to the Commissions of World Missions in Berlin in 1961, knowing that to become a reality, huge sums of money would have to be found.
Before traveling to Berlin, Bishop Moshi stood over a large volcanic boulder on the chosen site for the hospital to ask for God's assistance to secure the money needed. Today, this boulder takes pride of place in the gardens at the front of the hospital and bears the words of Bishop Moshi's prayer.
The dream became a reality when on 6th March 1971; President Nyerere of Tanganyika officially opened KCMC. 25 years later the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania established Tumaini University, comprising Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre as a Medical College; other colleges being Makumira and Iringa.
