THE AFRICA MALARIA DAY
25th April is a special day in Africa as the whole continent commemorates the "Africa Malaria Day", under different themes.
This years theme was "Free Africa from Malaria - Roll Back Malaria"
Africa sees high morbidity and mortality rates as a result of Malaria; children in particular are the worst hit by Malaria. The WHO reported in 2003 that every 30 seconds, a child dies of Malaria in Africa.
This year's theme would not have come at a better time that when we are all required to join efforts to roll back Malaria and ultimately free Africa from Malaria.
It is against this background that KCMC SO took a bold stem to join the rest of Africa in commemorating this year's important event on 25th April, 2007. The organization commemorated the event in a style, by visiting admitted children in Paediatric wards 1 and 2 respectively at KCM hospital, also 60 T-Shirts with imprints were given out to the under fives in the same wards. The funds to buy and print the T-Shirts were from the Joint Malaria Programme (JMP). Many thanks goes to the JMP at KCMC because had it not been them, there would not have been a gift for the children.
To grace the occasion was the Paediatrician from the Same Hospital, Dr. L.Msuya whom we really appreciated for her presence because it added value and meaning to the event.
There were two representatives from JMP who participated in the activity. They are recommended because they left their busy schedule and showed how committed they are in the Roll Back Malaria fight.
The whole KCMC SO executive members were present and participated actively. Apart from handing out the T-Shirts, they also asked questions to the parents and guardians on different common areas of malaria and malaria prevention.
Lastly, we wish to encourage the KCMC SO executive members, future leaders to continue with this and even do more better next time.
